A compact, perennial climber with beautiful, wide lanceolate dark green leaves. Small, deep crimson-purple, almost black flowers with yellow stamens are popular with insects. Its fruit have the form of the long pointed pods that open in the autumn spreading seeds with silky fluffs. In spring old woody stems should be cut back at the ground level. It requires well drained soil that is rich in humus and kept moist, but not waterlogged. Best planted in a warm and sunny position. An amateur plant that can be grown by the low fences, trellises and other low garden supports.
